Auto Liability insurance for truckers

Primary auto liability is the coverage the FMCSA requires before you can run under your own authority. It pays for injuries and property damage you cause to other people while operating your truck — and it is usually the largest part of a trucking insurance program, so shopping it across multiple carriers matters.

What auto liability covers

  • Bodily injury to other drivers, passengers and pedestrians
  • Damage to other vehicles and property (guardrails, buildings, signs)
  • Legal defense costs if you are sued after an accident
  • MCS-90 endorsement required for interstate for-hire carriers
  • BMC-91X federal filing and state filings where required

Who needs it

Every for-hire motor carrier and owner-operator with their own authority. If you are leased to a carrier, their policy usually covers you while under dispatch — see Non-Trucking & Bobtail Liability for the rest of the time.

Common requirements

  • $750,000 federal minimum for most general freight carriers over 10,001 lbs
  • $1,000,000 is what most brokers and shippers ask for
  • Higher limits (up to $5,000,000) for certain hazardous materials
  • State intrastate requirements vary — we confirm yours

Requirements change by state, cargo and contract. This page is general information — your agent will confirm what applies to your operation.

How much auto liability do I need for my new authority?

The federal minimum for most general freight is $750,000, but most brokers require $1,000,000. We usually recommend $1,000,000 so you can accept loads from more brokers.

Do you file the BMC-91X for me?

Yes. Once your policy is bound, we coordinate the BMC-91X with the carrier so your authority can become active, and we keep the filing current at renewal.

What affects the price of auto liability?

Your radius of operation, what you haul, driver experience and MVRs, the states you run in, years in business and loss history. We compare multiple carriers to find the best fit.
